Machen 박사가 “What is Faith?” 라는 책을 썼습니다. 신앙이 무엇이냐 라고 했을 때

“Knowledge” 지식을 얘기했습니다.

Dr. J. G. Machen wrote a book called What is Faith? His answer was “Knowledge.”

그래서 죤 낙스는 “무지는 죄가 아닐지 몰라도 타락의 원인이 된다.”

So John Knox said, “Ignorance may not be sin, but it is the origin of the fall.”

브라우닝은 한걸음 더 나아가서 “무지는 무죄가 아니라 유죄이다.”라고 했습니다.

Browning went one step further and said, “Ignorance is not innocence but sin.”

몰랐으니 내가 상관이 없는 것이 아니라 모르는 것이 죄가 된다는 것입니다.

Rather than not caring because one did not know, he is saying that not knowing becomes sin.

다시 말해서 배우지 않은 것이 죄요, 가르치지 않는 것이 죄입니다.

In other words, not learning is sin and not teaching is sin.

우리 교회도 원래 유대인들이 회당으로 지었는데, 유대인들은 교회를 회당이라고 하는데 매주 토요일 예배를 드리는데 4시간 이상 드립니다.

The Jews call the church a synagogue and they worship every Saturday for over 4 hours.

매일매일 나와서 나누어서 성경을 공부합니다. 그래서 교실이 많습니다.

They go there everyday and divide into groups to study the Bible so there are many classrooms.

원래 유대인들은 하나님을 경외하는 것이 참으로 까다롭습니다. 오늘날도 구약에서 먹지 말라는 것은 먹지 않습니다.

The way Jews worship God is very intricate. Even today, they adhere strictly to the dietary restrictions outlined in the Old Testament.

철저하게 하나님의 계명을 지키고 하루에 3번 기도하고 성경을 읽으면서 하나님 앞에 철저하게 살아가는 것입니다.

They thoroughly keep God’s commandments, pray three times a day, read the Bible, and live before God carefully.

여름에도 검정 양복 입고 모자까지 쓰고 다니는 것은 하나님 경외의 표시입니다.

Wearing black suits and hats during the summer reflects their reverence for God.

그렇다면 지금 여러분들이 알고 있는; 가지고 있는 확신은 무엇이고, 만약에 여러분이 이 세상을 떠날 때에 사랑하는 사람에게 마지막 편지를 쓴다면 그 내용이 무엇이겠습니까?

With this in mind, what convictions guide you today? If you were to leave this world and were to write a letter to someone you love, what would be the content of the letter?

오늘 바울은 믿음의 아들이요 그의 후계자였던 초대 교회의 훌륭한 목회자였던 디모데에게 임종 직전에 마지막 편지를 쓰면서

As Paul writes his final letter before his death to Timothy, Paul’s son in the faith, successor, and great pastor of the early church, he says,

“너는 배우고 확신한 일에 거하라.” 다시 말해서 “배우라, 확신하라, 거하라”는 내용입니다.

“continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of.” In other words, this is the content: “learn, be convinced, continue in”

알아도 좋고 몰라도 좋다는 얘기 아닙니다. 해도 좋고 안 해도 좋다는 얘기 아닙니다.

He’s not saying, it does not matter whether you know it or not. Neither is he saying, it does not matter whether you do it or not.
