607년 영국의 James 1세가 국왕에 올랐을 때, 기독교인들을 많이 핍박했습니다. 1620년 9월 어느 날, 타락하고 부패한 영국 국교의 핍박을 피해서 신앙의 순수성을 지키기 위해서 Puritans/ 퓨리탄이라고 불리는 102명의 청교도들이 한자리에 모였습니다.
In 1607, King James I of England began to persecute Christians. In September 1620, 102 men, who were called by the name Puritan, came together to protect the purity of their faith from the Anglican Church.
그리고 저들은 하나님의 말씀대로 바로 살고, 신앙의 자유를 찾아서 정든 조국 영국을 떠나기로 결심합니다.
These men decided to leave their homeland in search of freedom of religion so that they can live according to the Word of God.
그리고 180톤의 Mayflower 라는 배를 타고 두 달에 걸쳐 대서양을 건너 드디어 1620년 11월 21일에 미지의 땅 미국 Massachusetts, 플리머스에 도착을 했습니다.
They sailed through the Atlantic Ocean for two months on the Mayflower – a wooden ship that weighed about 180 tons. At last, they arrived in the unknown land of Plymouth, Massachusetts on November 21, 1620.
역사에 보면 그해 겨울은 몹씨도 추웠다고 합니다. 먹을 것이 없어 굶주림과 질병 때문에 함께 왔던 사람들이 죽어 갔고, 밤이 되면 원주민 인디언들의 습격을 받아 많은 사람이 죽었습니다. 그렇게 죽은 사람이51명, 이제 51명만이 살아 남았습니다.
History tells us that they experienced freezing cold that winter. Some starved to death and others died of sickness. During the nights, they were even attacked by Native Americans. 51 people died and only 51 survived.
살아있는 그들은 눈 덮인 언 땅을 파고 사랑하는 남편과 아내, 부모와 자식을 장례 지내야 했던 아프고 모진 슬픔을 체험 했습니다.
The survivors experienced the painful and agonizing sorrow of having to dig through snow-covered ground to bury their beloved spouses, parents, and children.
그러나 그들은 하나님을 믿는 믿음이 있었기에 낙심하거나 좌절하지 않았습니다. 그들은 하나님을 분명하게 신뢰했습니다.
Nevertheless, they were not discouraged because they had faith in God. They trusted in God wholeheartedly.
하나님께서 반드시 축복해 주실 것을 믿었습니다. 꿈과 소망을 잃지 않고 그들은 눈물을 흘리며 씨를 뿌렸습니다.
They believed that God was going to bless them without failure. Without losing hope, they kept sowing seeds with tears.
열심히 땅을 개간하고 감자와 옥수수를 심었습니다. 그러나 그 해에 거두어 들인 첫 추수는 흉년이 들어 많이 거두지를 못했습니다.
They tilled the ground and planted potatoes and corn. However, they did not yield much fruit that first year due to famine.
그러나 그들은 보잘 것 없는 열매를 교회 강단에 쌓아 놓고 “하나님의 은혜입니다.” 눈물로 하나님께 감사의 예배를 드렸습니다.
Even so, they harvested the fruit from the ground, laid them at the altar, and confessed saying, “It is the grace of God.” They worshipped God with tears of thanksgiving.
“지금까지 생명을 지켜 주신 하나님, 아무 것도 없는 중에 먹을 것 주신 하나님, 너무도 감사합니다.” 하나님의 은혜에 대한 감사의 예배는 북 바치는 감격이었습니다.
“God, you have kept us until now. You have fed us when we were in need. We give you thanks.” They were so moved by the grace of God as they worshipped Him in thanksgiving.
그러면서 그들은 외치고 다짐하고 다짐했습니다. “In God We Trust – 우리는 하나님을 믿노라. 하나님은 우리에게 복 주실거야.”
Then they made a vow. “In God we Trust. God will bless us.”
