어떤 목사님이 목회는 안 되고 아들이 하나 있는데 공부는 안 하고 너무 속이 상해서 한번은 그 아들을 붙잡고 웃으면서 “너 공부하기 싫지, 나도 그랬다. 오늘 부터 놀아라, 천국 가는데 지장 없으면 맘대로 해라.”
A pastor was having a hard time in ministry. His son was not interested in studying and gave him a hard time. One day, he said to his son, “I know you do not want to study. I was like that too. Just play all you want as long as it does not affect your faith.”
그리고 얼마 후에 그 아들이 공부를 너무 열심히 잘 하더라는 것입니다. 이상해서 물었습니다. “어떻게 해서 그렇게 공부를 열심히 하느냐?” 했더니 “아빠 믿고는 못 살 것 같아서 열심히 합니다.”
After a while, his son began to study diligently. The pastor found this to be very strange. He asked, “What made you want to study so hard?” His son replied, “I decided to study hard because I know you will not be able to take care of me.”
위로하고 격려해 주면 기적이 일어납니다.
Miracles happen when you comfort and encourage others.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 우리는 서로 위로하고 격려하면서 교회에 도움이 되는 사람이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
Beloved saints, I pray in the name of the Lord that we will seek the good of the church by comforting and encouraging others.
- 넓은 마음으로 이해해 주는 사람입니다. Onesiphorus was a man who was understanding.
“그는… 내가 사슬에 매인 것을 부끄러워하지 아니하고..”오네시보로는 내가 사슬에 매인 것, 죄수의 몸으로 로마의 감옥에 있는 것을 부끄러워하지 않았다는 말은 그가 바울을 넓은 마음으로 이해 해주었다는 것입니다.
“He was not ashamed of my chains.” Onesiphorus was not ashamed of the fact that Paul was a prisoner. This means that Onesiphorus understood and embraced Paul despite the fact he was chained in Roman prison.
이것은 대단히 중요한 말입니다. 권모술수와 거짓과 위선이 판을 치는 인간사에서, 어떤 한 사람의 진실과 진가를 순수하게 평가해 주고, 그것을 넓은 마음으로 이해 해준다는 것은 참으로 아름다운 일입니다.
This detail is extremely important. Understanding others in a society that is characterized by evil scheming, lies, and hypocrisy is rare. Recognizing a person’s integrity and purity is truly beautiful.
우리가 잘 아는 대로 바울이 감옥에 간 것은 복음을 위해서, 순교적 차원에서 갔습니다.
As we all know well, Paul was imprisoned for preaching the gospel.
그런데 그 당시 많은 사람들은 그렇게 생각하지 않았습니다. 뭔가 잘못한 게 있어서 감옥에 갔다고 오해를 하고 그 곁을 떠났습니다.
However, not many people believed this to be the reason Paul was sent to prison. At the time, most people thought Paul was imprisoned for committing a crime. This was why they left Paul.
그러나 오네시보로는 바울의 진실을 알아주고 넓은 마음으로 이해 해주었습니다.
Nevertheless, Onesiphorus knew that Paul was innocent. He embraced Paul.
남편의 사랑은 뭐니뭐니해도 넓은 마음입니다. 이해하는 마음입니다. 남자는 따지고 시비하고 좁게 놀면 안 되는 것입니다.
Husbands must have a big heart. They ought to be understanding. Men ought not to be overly sensitive.
크게 놀아야 합니다. 넓게 이해 해야 합니다. 어떤 남자는 밥이 질다, 되다, 반찬이 짜다, 싱겁다,
They need to be generous and bountiful. Some men grumble and say, “The rice is not cooked right, the side dishes are too salty or bland.”
여자가 치마 입는다, 바지 입는다. 그런것 가지고 싸워요. 아무거나 주는대로 먹고 살아요. 여자가 치마 입던지, 바지 입던지, 아무거나 입으면 어때요. 여자도 그렇습니다. 어지간하면 넓은 마음으로 이해하며 살아요.
Some men are not happy about women wearing skirts or pants. Just be thankful and eat whatever they give you. And who cares about what women wear? The same is true with women. Choose to be understanding. Be generous.
어떤 집사님 남편이 술 먹고, 노름했습니다. 집사님 속이 너무 상해서 교회 와서 대성통곡을 했습니다.
A man gambled one night after drinking alcohol. His wife was so anguished that she came to church to weep bitterly.
호랑말코 같은 놈. 분이 나서 난리입니다. 그런데 술, 노름 죄 보다 미움의 죄, 분노의 죄가 더 무섭습니다.
She kept insulting him out of anger. However, the sin of anger and hatred is more terrifying than drinking or gambling.
그 미움이 화병이 돼서 얼마 있다가 죽었습니다. 노름하던 남편은 회개하고 안수집사 됐어요.
She could not hold her anger. She died after a while. The gambling husband thereafterrepented and was ordained as a deacon.
일찍이 예수님께서도 다른 사람을 넓은 마음으로 이해 해주셨습니다. 형식적인 종교 생활에 대해서 고민하는 니고데모를 이해 해주셨습니다.
Jesus was also generous towards others. He embraced others. Jesus sympathized with Nicodemus when Nicodemus was troubled by religious mannerisms.
물질의 욕망과 습관적인 부정의 삶에서 헤어나오지 못하는 삭개오를 이해하고 구원해주셨습니다.
When Zacchaeus was caught in his sinful lifestyle and could not do away with his love for the things of this world, Jesus came to save him. Jesus embraced him.
예수님 눈치만 보면서 멀리서 따라갔던 베드로를 이해하고 사랑해주셨습니다.
Peter followed Jesus at a distance when Jesus was arrested. Nonetheless, Jesus embraced and loved Peter.
동전 두 닢을 헌금통에 넣은 과부의 심정을 이해하고 축복해주셨습니다. 그러므로 우리 성도들도 넓은 마음으로 이해 해주면서 살아야 합니다.
When a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, Jesus embraced and blessed her. Therefore, Christians ought to have a big heart and embrace others.
어떤 지혜로운 충신이 왕의 친서를 가지고 상대방 나라에 가서 그 나라 임금에게 이런 말을 했습니다.
A king sent his servant to deliver a message to the king of another nation. The wise servant said,
“폐하, 폐하는 보름달이고 우리나라 임금은 초생달입니다.” 그 한마디에 여러 해 묵은 감정이 다 풀리고 후히 대접을 받았습니다.
“Your majesty, you are like the full moon while my king is like the new moon.” Upon hearing this, all the bad feelings that had piled up for years disappeared. The servant was even treated generously.
그리고 자기 나라에 왔는데 자기 임금이 화가 났습니다. “그대가 이런 이런 말을 한 게 사실인가?”
The king of his country was angry when the servant came back. The king said, “Is it true that you said such a thing?”
“예, 폐하, 그것은 오해입니다. 그 말은 사실인데 보름달은 끝이라는 뜻입니다. 초생달은 떠오르는 달입니다. 폐하는 떠 오르는 달입니다.”
The servant replied, “Yes, Your majesty. But there is a misunderstanding. The full moon refers to the end while the new moon refers to the new era. You will begin a new era, my king.”
이 말 한마디가 사람의 기분을 확 바꾸어 놓았습니다. 무슨 말 이든지 넓은 마음으로 이해하면 기분이 좋아집니다.
These words changed the mood of the king. If we have an understanding heart, anything we hear will make us happy.
그렇습니다. 이민 교회 안에 보면 정말이지 기구한 운명, 별의 별 사람이 다 있습니다. 시집을 3~4번 이상 가신 분들도 더러 있습니다.
That’s right. There are all kinds of people in the immigrant church. They all have their own stories. There are some people who have been married three or four times.
그 사람인들 그렇게 가고 싶어 갔겠어요? 다 사연이 있습니다. 그것을 이해해 주어야 합니다.
Do you think they wanted to do that? They all have their reasons. We must understand them and embrace them.
예수님의 족보 가운데도 부끄러운 여인들이 많습니다. 여리고성에 기생 라합, 남편과 사별하고 나이 많은 보아스와 재혼한 룻, 우리아의 아내 밧세바, 이들은 모두가 세상적으로 보면 비판과 비난을 받아야 하는 죄인들입니다.
Consider the genealogy of Jesus. It includes some shameful women such as Rahab (a prostitute who lived in Jericho), Ruth (a woman who was remarried to Boaz after the death of her husband), and Bathsheba (the wife of Uriah). From a secular perspective, all these women were sinners who deserved to be criticized.
그러나 그들은 예수 그리스도의 세계의 일원이 됐습니다.
But they became a part of the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
예수 그리스도의 세계란 바로 교회를 가리킵니다. 그러므로 교회 안에서는 그 어떤 사람이라도 이해가 되고 인정을 받을 수 있어야 합니다.
The kingdom of Jesus Christ refers to the Church. Therefore, everyone in the church must be embraced, no matter what kind of past they may have.
교회에 와서 정죄 받으면 누가 교회에 오겠습니까? 그러므로 교회는 사람의 눈에 비쳐지는 모습에 관심을 가지면 않됩니다. 하나님의 눈에 비쳐지는 모습에 관심이 있어야 합니다.
If they are condemned at church, who will come to church? Therefore, the church should not be concerned about the outward appearance of a person. What matters is how the Lord sees them. We ought to see them in the same manner.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 우리는 모든 사람을 하나님의 관점에서 바라보면서 넓은 마음으로 이해 해주시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
Beloved saints, I pray in the name of the Lord that you will see others how the Lord sees them. Let us be understanding and embrace others with a big heart.
