독립운동가 월남 이상재 선생은 젊었을 때부터 정부 고위 관리를 지냈습니다. 조선을 살리려고 했지만 잘 안됐습니다.

Lee Sang-jae, a South Korean independence activist, served as a high-ranking government official ever since he was young. He tried to save Chosun, but it was not easy.

사표를 내고 스스로 낙향해서 사는데 어느 날, 정치범으로 몰려 자기 둘째 아들과 함께 감옥에 갇혔는데 아들이 죽었습니다.

He decided to resign and go back to his hometown. One day, he and his younger son were arrested and imprisoned for their political activity. Then, his second son died.

자식을 잃은 이상재 선생이 얼마나 힘들었겠어요. 그때 감옥에 동료 하나가 신약성경을 주는데 성경이 눈에 들어 오겠어요?

Can you imagine how it would have been for Mr. Lee? At that time, another prisoner handed him the New Testament. Would this ?

꿈 속에 어떤 사람이 나타나 자기를 소개하는데 자기는 위대한 임금이 보낸 사람인데 그런데 너는 나를 만나 주지 않으니 내가 더 이상 기다릴 수 없어서 너를 감옥에 가두었다.

Then, a man appeared in his dream. He introduced himself as a messenger of the king. He said, “I imprisoned you because you wouldn’t come to see me.”

깨어 보니 꿈인데 혹시 신약성경에 나타난 예수님인가? 그래서 성경을 막 읽기 시작합니다.

He woke up and thought to himself, ‘Could this be the Jesus of the New Testament?’ So, he began to read the Bible.

예수 그리스도의 죽으심과 부활, 성경을 읽으면 읽을수록 깨달아지고 믿어집니다. 눈물을 펑펑 흘리면서 예수님을 구세주로 영접합니다. 자기의 앞날을 하나님께 맡기게 됩니다.

He came to understand the meaning of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In tears, he decided to receive Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Then, Mr. Lee committed his way to the Lord.

아들을 죽인 그들을 용서하고, 마음의 절망이 사라지고 평안이 찾아 오고 희망이 생겨서 독립운동을 하게 되었습니다.

He forgave those who killed his son. Peace and hope filled his heart which then led him to join the Korean independence movement.

그렇습니다. 이제 우리는 우리의 길을 버리고 하나님의 길을 따라야 합니다. 우리를 의지하지 말고 하나님 의지해야 합니다. 더 이상 사람의 인도를 받지 말고 하나님의 인도를 받아야 합니다.

That’s right. Now, we must forsake our ways and follow God’s way. Rather than trusting ourselves, we must trust in God. We need to be led by God, not men.
