예수님께서 마리아를 칭찬하실 때 “마리아는 이 좋은 편을 택하였으니 빼앗기지 아니하리라”라고 했습니다.

When Jesus commended Mary, He said, Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.

좋은 편이란 뭡니까? 급하고 바쁜 일이 아니라, 중요한 일 방향이 있는 일이라는 것입니다.

What does it mean “better?” It’s not busy work, but an important work with direction.

생명 되신 예수님을 택했다는 것입니다. She selected Jesus, the source of Life.

그렇습니다. 마르다는 바쁜 일을 선택했습니다. 세상 일, 바쁜 일에 우선순위를 두었기 때문에 마음이 분주했습니다.

Yes. Martha chose the busy work. She was worried because she prioritized the worldly work and the busy work.

여유가 없었습니다. 이해가 없었습니다. 사랑이 없었습니다.

There was no room in her heart. There was no understanding and no love.

그 바쁜 일 때문에 여러 가지 염려, 근심, 걱정이 있었습니다. 원망과 불평이 있었습니다.

Because of busy work, she was filled with worry. She was filled with complaint.

자기를 알아주지 않고 도와주지 않는 사람을 향해서 섭섭했습니다.

If someone doesn’t acknowledge her work, she feels disappointed.

그러나 마리아는 중요한 일을 선택했습니다. 예수님 발아래 고요히 엎드려 생명의 말씀에 귀를 기울였습니다.

But Mary chose the important work. She listened to the Word of Life at the feet of Jesus.

말씀이 주시는 기쁨과 즐거움을 누렸습니다. 평안과 은혜를 누렸습니다.

She enjoyed the happiness that came from the Word of God. She enjoyed the peace and grace.

축복 된 삶이 무엇인가를 알았습니다. 중요한 일이 무엇인가를 알았습니다.

She realized the blessed life. She realized further what,s important in life.

그래서 그의 생애 결정적 순간에 마리아는 자기가 가지고 있는 가장 소중한 옥합을 예수님을 위해서 깨뜨려 헌신했습니다.

That‘s why she broke the alabastar jar for Jesus.

그때 가롯유다는 “그것을 팔면 300데나리온은 받을 텐데, 그것을 팔아서 가난한 사람을 돕는 것이 마땅하지 않습니까?”

But Judas said, “It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.”

그러자 예수님께서는 “가만 두어라, 마리아는 내 장사를 미리 준비하였다”고 오히려 칭찬했습니다.

But Jesus said to leave her alone as she has prepared for His burial.

그 당시 예수님의 심정은 장차 예루살렘에 들어갔을 때 고난을 받으시고 십자가에 죽으실 일을 생각하며 무척 고통스러웠을 것입니다.

It must have been a very difficult time for Jesus when he entered Jerusalem because He knew that He’ll have to endure the suffering of the cross.

그런데 이런 예수님의 마음을 가까이 있는 제자도 모르는데 마리아는 미리 알고 예수님과 미리 대화를 나눈 것입니다.

But while the disciples didn‘t know how Jesus felt, Mary knew about it.

다시 말해서 마리아는 예수님의 깊은 요구가 무엇인지를 알아 차렸고 마르다는 일상적인 요구에만 빠져서 깊은 차원의 요구를 알지 못했던 것입니다.

Thus, Mary knew what Jesus wanted deeply while Martha only focused on the daily tasks.

마르다는 외식적이고 형식적으로 예수님을 섬겼지만 마리아는 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 깨닫고 예수님의 마음을 살피면서 거기에 따라서 행동했습니다.

Martha served Jesus perfunctorily, but Mary listened and realized what Jesus' heart wanted and acted upon it.

그렇습니다. 사람은 누구든지 무슨 일을 하든지 상대방의 요구를 정확히 알고 그 요구를 들어 줄

때에 성공할 수 있습니다.

Yes. When acting upon a request, to be successful, you must know what is truly requested.
