예루살렘 동쪽 베다니라는 작은 마을이 있습니다.

In the east of Jerusalem, in the small town called Bethany.

거기에 마르다와 마리아, 나사로가 그곳에 살고 있었는데 그들은 예수님의 사랑을 많이 받았습니다.

Martha and Mary and Lazarus lived there, and received much love from Jesus.

나사로가 죽었을 때에 예수님이 그를 다시 살려주었습니다.

When Lazarus died, Jesus raised him up from the dead.

그래서 그들의 마음속에는 언제나 예수님에 대한 깊은 감사의 정이 있었습니다.

Therefore, they always have a deep appreciation toward Jesus.

하루는 예수님께서 제자들을 이끄시고 베다니 마을에 오셨습니다.

One time Jesus came to Bethany with His disciples.

마르다가 예수님과 그 일행을 자기 집으로 영접하였습니다. 마르다는 준비하는 일 때문에 분주했습니다.

Martha invited them to their house. Martha was busy preparing.

귀한 손님이 오셨으니 집안 청소도 해야 하고 음식도 많이 준비해야 했습니다.

She needed to clean and prepare food because they were important guests.

성경에 보니 “마르다는 준비하는 일이 많아 마음이 분주한지라” 그랬습니다.

In the Bible, it says that Martha was busy with preparing.

그런데 정신없이 일하다 보니 자기를 도와줄 동생 마리아가 보이지를 않았습니다.

And she couldn’t see her sister Mary to help her.

지금 그 마리아는 어디 있습니까? “주의 발아래 앉아 그의 말씀을 듣더니…”

Where was Mary? “She was and her Jesus feet listening to His word.”

예수님 앞에 앉아서 예수님이 하시는 말씀을 듣고 있었습니다. 그것을 본 마르다는 화가 났습니다. Mary sat in front of Jesus and was listening to His words. When Martha saw this, she was angry.

그리고 자기는 열심히 일하고 있는데 예수님 앞에서 말씀을 듣고 있는 마리아를 향해서 뭐 한마디 “마리아야, 너 나가서 언니 좀 도와주렴…” 하셔야 하는데 가만히 계신 예수님이 약간은 원망스러웠습니다.

Martha probably wanted Jesus also to tell Mary to help her, but He didn‘t which frustrated her.

그래서 마르다는 “주여, 내 동생이 나 혼자 일하게 두는 것을 생각지 아니하시나이까? 저를 명하사 나를 도와주라 하소서.”

So Martha asked Jesus why he is letting Mary not work to help her. She asked him to tell Mary to help her.

섭섭하다고 투덜댔습니다. 그것을 보고 예수님께서 뜻밖에 뭐라고 대답했습니까?

But Jesus called on Martha that she is worrying about too many things.

“마르다야, 마르다야!…네가 많은 일로

염려하고 근심하나, 그러나 몇 가지만 하든지 혹 한가지 만이라도 족하니라.”

He suggested to focus on a couple of things or only one.

그렇습니다. 마르다는 준비하는 일이 많아서 마음이 분주했습니다. 그것 때문에 염려와 근심이 가득 차있었습니다.

Yes. Martha was preparing so much that her heart was occupied. That’s why her heart was filled with worry.

마음이 급해서 어쩔 줄을 몰랐습니다. 왜 그랬을까? 그것은 마르다가 선택한 일은 중요한 일이 아니었습니다.

She was in a hurry. Why so? It’s because she picked a less important task.

중요한 일은 언제나 마음에 기쁨과 평안을 가져다 줍니다. 왜요? 방향이 있기 때문입니다.

An important task gives us joy and peace in our heart. Why? Because there’s direction.

“나는 지금 중요한 일을 하고 있다” 긍지와 자부심이 있을 것입니다.

We can have pride that we are doing an important task.

그러나 마르다가 하는 일은 중요한 일이 아니고 바쁜 일이었습니다.

But Martha was doing a busy task not an important task.

그것 때문에 마르다의 마음은 그저 분주하고 여러 가지 염려와 근심이 많았습니다.

That’s why her heart had a lot of worries.
