성경에 보면 돈을 너무 많이 가져도 후회하고, 세상을 너무 많이 알아도 후회한다고 했습니다. 그러나 사랑으로 하는 일은 후회가 없습니다. 그런데 문제는 사랑은 후회가 없는 데도 사랑하려고 해도 잘 안된다는 것입니다.

According to the Bible, a person who possesses a large sum of money or great knowledge will still have regrets. Nevertheless, one who loves does not have regrets. But the problem is that loving others is not easy.

그래서 베드로 사도도 “뜨겁게 서로 사랑할지니 사랑은 허다한 죄를 덮느니라” 사랑은 위대한 것입니다. 그래서 사랑은 많이 할수록 좋습니다.

Hence, the Apostle Peter said, “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.” Love is truly great. Thus, the more we love, the better it is.

[사랑이라는 이름의 씨앗] 이라는 글에 보면 ‘내 마음이 메마를 때는 나는 늘 남을 보았습니다. 남이 나를 메마르게 하는 줄 알았기 때문입니다. 그러나 이제 보니 내가 메마르고 차가운 것은 남 때문이 아니라 내 속에 사랑이 없었기 때문입니다.

In the article [Seed Named Love], it says, “I always looked to others when my heart was dry. I thought they were to blame for my dry heart. But now I see that it is not because of others that my heart is dry and cold, but because there was no love in me.

내 마음이 외로울 때면 나는 늘 남을 보았습니다. 남이 나를 버리는 줄 알았기 때문입니다. 그러나 이제 보니 내가 외롭고 허전한 것은 남 때문이 아니라 내 속에 사랑이 없었기 때문입니다.

I have always looked to others when I felt lonely. I thought they had abandoned me. But now I see that I am lonely and empty not because of others, but because there was no love in me.

내 마음에 불평이 쌓일 때면 나는 늘 남을 보았습니다. 남이 나를 불만스럽게 하는 줄 알았기 때문입니다. 그러나 이제 보니 나에게 쌓이는 불평과 불만은 남 때문이 아니라 내 속에 사랑이 없었기 때문입니다.’

But now that I see that I was frustrated not because of others, but because there was no love in me.” I have always looked to others when I felt discontent. I thought they were to blame for my discontentment.

그렇습니다. 우리가 살아온 지난날을 돌이켜 보면 보람된 일이 무엇입니까? 사랑하며 살았던 것뿐입니다. 사랑으로 행했던 일만 남아 있습니다.

That’s right. What has been the most rewarding experience in your life? It is to love. Only what we have done in love remains.

무엇인가 사랑으로 했던 일, 누군가를 사랑하며 위로했던 일, 그것이 보람이요 자랑입니다. 그러나 남을 미워하고 남의 마음 아프게 하고 남에게 상처를 준 일은 그 당시에는 잘했다고 할지라도 끊임없이 후회하게 합니다.

Our delight is in loving and comforting others. However, hating or hurting others will only make us regret even if we think we did what was right in that moment.

왜요? 사랑으로 하지 못했기 때문입니다. 다윗이 어떤 사람입니까? 그의 마음에는 사랑이 있는 사람입니다.

Why? Because we failed to act in love. What characterized David? David was a man full of love.

10여 년 동안 사울 때문에 가족도 잃어버렸습니다. 자신도 죽느냐 사느냐 하는 생사의 문제로 시달렸습니다. 이유 없이 고난 많이 당했습니다.

In the span of 10 years, David lost his family because he was running away from Saul. He himself was on the verge of death. He faced many sufferings without a reason.

그런데 그 원수 사울을 죽일 기회가 찾아온 것입니다. 그냥 죽이면 됩니다. 지가 그냥 굴러 들어온 것입니다.

But one day, an opportunity came to avenge and kill Saul. He could have just killed him right there. Saul himself had come into the cave where David was.

요사이 하나님의 뜻이 아닌 것도 하나님의 뜻이라고 우기는 사람이 많은데, 이것이야말로 정말 하나님의 뜻이 아닙니까?

Nowadays, many people insist that something is the will of God when it is clearly not. But was not this an opportunity that God had provided for David?

그런데 다윗은 달랐습니다. 그것이 내게 아무리 유익이 된다고 해도 “사랑으로 재어 보고” “사랑으로 달아보니” 그게 안 맞더라는 것입니다.

David did not think so. It might have seemed profitable for him, but David “measured and weighed with love.” He did not believe that this was the will of God.

그래서 다윗은 그 순간을 잘 넘겼습니다. 나중에 사울왕에게 증거를 보여 주며 모두가 다 당신을 죽여야 한다고 했지만 나는 당신을 사랑합니다.”

Hence, he passed that moment well. Later, David showed King Saul the evidence that he could have killed him. “Everyone advised me to kill you, but I did not because of love.”

그렇습니다. 사랑은 이렇습니다. 그가 나를 사랑한다고 사랑하는 것이 아니라 사랑은 내가 그를 사랑하기 때문에 사랑하는 것입니다.

That’s right. This is love. We love not because the other person loves us first. Whether the other person reciprocates that love or not, we simply love.

문제는 내 마음입니다. 내 마음에 믿음이 있느냐, 사랑이 있느냐? 소망이 있느냐? 내가 어떤 모습으로 어떻게 사느냐에 따라서 달라지는 것입니다.

It is a matter of our heart. Is there faith or love in our hearts? Is there hope? It depends on one’s attitude of life.
