이스라엘 백성들이 고달픈 광야 40년 생활을 청산하고 이제 하나님께서 주신 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅, 가나안으로 들어갈 준비를 하고 있었습니다.

After wandering around in the wilderness for 40 years, the Israelites were preparing to enter into the Promised Land – the land flowing with milk and honey.

그때 그들에게 한 가지 결정해야 할 중요한 문제가 있었습니다.

But there was something that they first had to do.

그것은 다름이 아니라 이스라엘 열두 지파 중에서 한 지파를 선택하여 제사장을 뽑아서 이스라엘의 종교적 지도자가 되게 하는 것입니다.

It was none other than choosing a priest from one of the twelve tribes to be the religious leader of Israel.

다시 말해서 리더가 되는 제사장 가문이 되게 하는 일입니다.

In other words, they had to decide on a tribe that will be given the priestly duties and authority.

그런데 열두 지파의 모든 사람들이 다 모세의 후계자가 되기를 원했습니다. 열두 지파 모두 자기 지파 중에서 제사장이 선출되기를 원했습니다.

Everyone in the twelve tribes sought to be the successor of Moses. All twelve tribes wished that the priest would be chosen from their own tribe.

왜냐하면 그 당시 제사장은 권한이 막강했습니다. 현대판으로 이야기하면 행정, 입법, 사법, 삼권을 다 움켜쥐고 있는 권력입니다.

This was because a great authority was given to the priest at the time. Today the authority of the priest would be equivalent to having executive, judicial, or legislative powers.

그 당시는 신정정치가 이루어졌던 시대였기 때문에, 제사장은 백성을 위하여 제사를 드렸으며, 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 동시에 백성을 통치하였고, 백성을 재판하는 권한을 다 가지고 있었습니다.

In the age of theocracy, the priests offered sacrifices for their people, proclaimed the Word of God, governed their people, and even had the authority to judge their people.

그러므로 모세는 이 엄청난 권리를 행사하는 제사장을 어떤 지파에서 뽑을까 고민하면서 하나님께 이 문제를 가지고 특별히 기도했습니다.

For this reason, Moses prayed to God and contemplated which tribe should be chosen to exercise this great authority.

그때 하나님께서는 모세에게 한가지 방법을 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 어느 날 모세는 열두 지파를 불러서 그 열두 지파 중에서 대표자를 뽑아 자기들의 지팡이에 각 지파 대표들의 이름을 적게 했습니다.

It was then that God gave him instruction on how to go about it. One day, Moses called the twelve tribes to gather together. He asked each tribe to choose a representative and write their names on their staffs.

그리고 그 열두 지팡이를 모아서 하루 동안 제단의 법궤 앞에 두게 했습니다. 그런데 다음 날 아침, 열두 지팡이 중에서 레위 지파의 대표인 아론의 지팡이에만 이상한 현상이 나타났습니다.

Then, he collected the twelve staffs and placed them before the ark of the covenant. The next morning Moses saw that something strange happened only to the staff of Aaron, which represented the tribe of Levi.

“아론의 지팡이에 움이 돋고 순이 나고 꽃이 피어서 살구 열매가 열렸더라.” 봄의 역사가 일어난 것입니다.

“The staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds.” God’s wondrous work of Spring had been manifested.

결국 봄의 역사가 일어난 이 기이한 현상을 보고 모세는 그가 속한 이 지팡이의 소유자인 레위지파 아론을 택해서 제사장 지파가 되게 했습니다.

After witnessing God’s wondrous work, Moses chose Aaron from the tribe of Levi. Then, Moses made the tribe of Levi a priestly tribe.

다시 말해서 봄과 같은, 봄의 날씨가, 봄의 역사가 깃든 그 지파를 이스라엘의 지도자 지파가 되게 했습니다.

In other words, the tribe that had experienced God’s wondrous work of Spring was chosen to be the leading tribe of Israel.

그렇습니다. 예수 그리스도를 믿는 우리들 마음속에도 아론의 지팡이처럼 이 봄에 새순을 움트게 해야 합니다. 꽃을 피울 수 있어야 합니다. 향기를 낼 수 있어야 합니다. 그리고 새로운 열매를 맺게 해야 합니다.

That’s right. Those who believe in Jesus Christ must sprout this Spring just like the staff of Aaron. We need to blossom and impart a pleasant fragrance to others. We need to bear new fruit.

그렇습니다. 하나님의 능력과 은혜와 축복은 봄의 역사가 일어나 새순을 틔우는 자에게 나타나는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 이 봄에 새로운 역사를 시작해야 합니다.

That’s right. God’s power and His gracious blessings are manifested to those who sprout in Spring. Thus, we need to seek transformation this Spring.

이 봄에 새로운 결단과 결심을 해야 합니다. 이 봄에 정신 차려야 합니다. 영적으로 깨어나야 합니다.

We need to make new resolutions and new decisions. We need to wake up. We need a spiritual awakening this Spring.

그래서 봄 날씨처럼 우리들의 마음에 신비스러운 봄의 역사가 일어나기를 바랍니다.

Our hearts must experience God’s wondrous work of transformation during this season.

대지를 뚫고 나오는 새순처럼, 예수 그리스도의 새 생명을 움트게 하여 새로운 결단, 새로운 시작, 새로운 역사가 일어나기를 바랍니다.

Just like a new shoot that springs up from the ground, we need to start anew, make new resolutions, and make new history through the life of Jesus Christ.

사람다운 사람, 성도다운 성도, 교회다운 교회가 되는 것은 참으로 어렵고 중요합니다.

There is a difference between a human being and being human. Being a true saint and a true church is difficult, but extremely important.
