어느 역사가는 이런 말을 했습니다. “오랫동안 역사를 연구하고 사람들을 관찰해 보고 얻은 결론은 하나님께서 위대하게 쓰는 사람은 하나의 특징이 있는데 그것은 선을 심는 사람, 아낌없이 바치는 사람이었다.”라고 했습니다.

One historian said, “After studying history and observing people for a long time, I came to one conclusion. Those whom God uses mightily are people who sow good and give generously.”

마이클 조던이 처음 농구를 시작할 때 아주 가난해서 연습장에 가야 하는데 차비가 없습니다. 그래서 택시를 세워서 “나 마이클 조던이라는 농구 선수인데 차비가 없어서 그런데 그냥 좀 태워 주세요.”

When Michael Jordan was a young player, he was very poor. Since he did not have money, he asked the taxi drivers saying, “My name is Michael Jordan and I am a basketball player. I don’t have enough money but could you please take me to the gym?”

그러자 모두가 욕하고 가버렸다고 합니다. 그런데 한 택시 운전수는 빙긋 웃으면서 “타세요. 나도 당신의 Fan이 되겠습니다. 좋은 선수가 되세요.”

Everyone except for one taxi driver smiled at him and said, “Come on in. I will be your fan. I hope you become a good player.”

그 후 조던이 유명한 선수가 되고 난 뒤 인터뷰할 때에 그 택시 기사를 얘기했는데 나중에 만나서 그렇게 많이 도와주었다고 합니다.

When Michael Jordan became famous, he shared this story during an interview. He, then, had an opportunity to meet the taxi driver and pay him back with more.

그래서 우리말에 “모든 일은 자기가 할 탓이다.” 자기의 사랑은 자기가 받는다고 했습니다. 현대인에게 가장 큰 문제는 약속과 기대가 없다는 것입니다.

There is a saying that goes like this: “Everything depends on you.” It depends on you whether you will be loved by others or not. Today, people do not expect promises to be fulfilled.

그래서 어떤 학자는 “현대인들이 불안 해 하는 것은 절대적인 가치를 상실했기 때문이다.” 내일에 대한 소망, 꿈, 희망이 없다는 것입니다. 그러나 우리 그리스도인들은 다르게 살아야 합니다.

One scholar said, “In modern society, people grow anxious because they do not believe in absolute truth.” They do not have hope for tomorrow. Nevertheless, Christians ought to be different.
