내가 예수라 하는 사람이 세계에 20여명이 되는데 그중에 15명이 한국사람이랍니다. 정신 나갔어요.

There are about 20 people in the world who claim to be Jesus Christ and 15 of them are Korean. They are out of their mind.

우리나라 기독교 초창기에 어느 마을에 교회를 열심히 다니는 권사님 한 분이 있었습니다. 그런데 너무 맹종하는 것이 문제였습니다.

There was once a lady who became a devout believer when Christianity first entered Korea. However, she had a problem with blind obedience.

예를 들면 ‘범사에 감사하라’는 말을 들으면 전후좌우를 살피지 않고 무조건 ‘감사합니다’

For example, upon hearing the words, “Give thanks in all circumstances,” she began to give thanks regardless of the context.

옆집 아이가 아프다는 소리를 듣고‘주여, 감사합니다’라고 했습니다. 그 소리를 들은 옆집 사람이 얼마나 섭섭했겠습니까?

When she heard that the child next door became sick, she would said, “Lord, thank you!” Would that not have hurt the parents of this child?

그 교회 장로님이 사업에 망했습니다. 그 소식을 듣고도 ‘주여, 감사합니다’ 그 장로님 마음이 어떻겠어요?

An elder at her church went bankrupt one day. When she heard this she said, “Lord, thank you!” How would the elder have felt?

그래서 사람들은 그 권사님에게 별명을 하나 지어주었는데 ‘감사할머니’라고 했습니다.

Eventually, this lady earned a nickname. People referred to her as the “Thank you Grandma.”

거기까지는 좋았는데 하루는 이 권사님 저녁 예배를 마치고 집으로 돌아가는데 갑자기 파이어 엔진 차가 여러 대 경적을 울리면서 자기 집 쪽으로 가고 있었습니다.

Everything seemed fine up until this point. But one day, as she was going home from church after an evening service, she saw fire engines heading to her house.

깜짝 놀라 혹시나 하고 두근거리는 마음으로 달려서 자기 집에 도착해 보니 이 권사님 집에 불이 나서 다 타버린 것입니다.

She was startled and ran to her house. Upon her arrival, her house had already burnt down.

얼마나 기가 막혔겠습니까? 그 자리에 털썩 주저 앉으면서 하는 말이, 무슨 말 했을까요?

How shocking would this have been? She collapsed and said something aloud. What do you think she said?

평소 같으면 당연히 ‘주여, 감사합니다’ 해야 하는데 ‘나무아미타불’이라고 했습니다. 이 권사님은 원래 절에 다니다가 예수님을 영접하고 교회를 다녔습니다.

Normally, she would have said, “Lord, thank you!” But this time, she said, “Save us, merciful Buddha.” In this instant, this grandma converted from Christianity to Buddhism.

어느 정도 마음에 여유가 있을 때는‘ 주여, 감사합니다’ 했는데 결정적인 순간에 옛날에 늘 외우던 ‘나무아미타불’이 갑자기 터져 나온 것입니다.

Although she would usually say, “Lord, thank you,” in that decisive moment, she said what was truly in her heart, “Save us, merciful Buddha.”

그렇습니다. 예수님을 미신적으로 믿으면 안되는 것입니다.

That’s right. We must not believe in Jesus in such a shallow manner.

하나님이 누구신지, 예수님이 누구신지, 성령님이 누구신지 제대로 알고 믿어야 합니다. 신앙생활에 목숨 걸 만큼 바른 신앙을 가져야 합니다.

We must clearly know who our God is – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We ought to be able to risk our life for our faith.
