7. 더 좋은 교회 일꾼이 되자/Let us be better servants of the Church

(골로새서(Colossians) 1:24-29)

Brandeis University의 Morrie Schwartz 사회학 교수가 불치의 병 Lou Gehrig병으로 죽었습니다.

Morrie Schwartz, a sociology professor at Brandeis University, died of Lou Gehrig’s disease.

루게릭 병이란 치명적 신경계통의 병으로 ‘근육위축성 측생경화증’이라는 병입니다. 몸의 근육이 5년여에 걸쳐 굳어지면서 죽는 병입니다.

This is a fatal disease that breaks down one’s nerve cells. This disease is also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Over the span of five years, one with ALS experiences a gradual loss of muscle control, which then leads to death.

1939년 New York Yankees 야구선수 루게릭이 이 병으로 처음 죽었습니다. 그때부터 이 병이 세상에 알려지기 시작했습니다.

The first person to die of this disease was a New York Yankees player named Lou Gehrig in 1939. This is how the world first came to know of this disease.

그리고 모리 슈와르츠 교수가 이 병에 걸려 죽기까지 마지막으로 매주 화요일마다 강의를 했습니다.

Despite his illness, Professor Morrie Schwartz decided to give lectures every Tuesday until his last breath.

그의 제자 가운데 Mitchell Albom이란 사람이 그 교수와 나눈 대화를 책으로 냈는데 그 책 이름이 ‘모리와 함께한 화요일’입니다.

Mitch Albom, one of his students, published a book that was based on the conversations he had with his professor. The title of the book is Tuesdays with Morrie.

모리 교수는 죽음을 앞에 두고 ‘시한부 인생을 어떻게 살아야 되나?’ 깊이 생각을 하다가 살아 있는 장례식을 합니다.

Terminally ill, Professor Morrie wondered how he should spend the rest of his life. He then decided to have a funeral before his actual death.

그 이유는 자기 친구 교수가 어느 날 갑자기 심장마비로 죽습니다. 지금 미국에서 제일 많이 죽는 병이 심장마비입니다. 갑자기 죽으니 이런 부질없는 일이 어디 있습니까?

He did this because one of his friends suddenly died of a heart attack. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. For a second, think about how futile funerals

can be.

장례식에 와서 사람들이 이런 말, 저런 말, 좋은 말을 많이 합니다. 그런데 정작 죽은 사람은 듣지 못하고 알지 못하니 얼마나 안타까운 일입니까?

People often speak highly of the deceased at funerals, but the dead cannot hear anything. How unfortunate is this?

그래서 자기 자신은 살아 있을 때에 장례식을 해서 거기 온 분들의 이야기를 다 듣습니다. 그리고 그의 남은 생애를 특별하게 가치 있게 살아갑니다.

For this reason, Morrie had his funeral while he was still alive and heard everything that people had to say of him. He then lived to make the most of his remaining time.

모리 교수는 ‘그렇구나! 내가 지금까지 어떻게 살아왔는가, 앞으로 살 생애가 지금까지 살아온 생애보다 결코 더 많지 않고 시한부 인생을 살아야 하는데 잘 살아야 되겠구나.

Professor Morrie constantly asked himself, “How have I lived my life until now? I do not have much time left now. I ought to live the rest of my life to the fullest.
